I recently wanted to upgrade a Dell XPS R-400 PII to something faster. Though, to my disappointment I found that I couldn't change any jumpers on the main-board to over-clock or upgrade my CPU. Just add a new video card, memory and hard-drive typical addon'z. I wasn't ready to change the 440BX main board just yet, the Dell system was working fine.
Though, reading through the alt.sys.pc-clone.dell I found the best option was a "Slocket" a Slot-to-Socket daughter card. Robert Hancock put together an extensive and impressive Dell Dimension Processor Upgrade FAQ about what your options are for a varity of Dell models.
It seemed that the Iwill Slocket II (ver 1.2) was getting the best results for adding a new CPU according to Robert's collection of data from Dell Talk...
It took about 10 minutes to set the jumpers, pull the old PII, slide the Slocket in and add the heat-sink (additional fan) then restart.
At boot up, my BIOS reported a Pentium Pro 500 MHz, though I ran Norton Utilities System Check and it recognized the PIII 700MHz! I haven't had a single problem with the new chip. The only real work was checking my BIOS version, Chip-set, and finding a place to purchase the Iwill Slocket. I bought the combo Slocket and PIII for less than $200 from Advanced Design Custom built computers
Your setup will vary depending upon model and which CPU you want to add, but this is the settings I used:
These are the specs for the system and below that is how I set the jumpers...
